2019 BCALS Winter Meeting – UBC

We were delighted to hold the 2019 BCALS Winter Meeting in the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre (IKBLC) at UBC on November 29, 2019.

This year’s theme was user engagement. Academic library workers’ focus on community engagement and patron-centred services conveys their commitment to service and their interest in remaining conscientious of patron needs and barriers. We heard from a panel of experienced library and information professionals about how they explore opportunities for engaging with user communities, seek and make the best use of user feedback and assessment strategies, and forge partnerships within and beyond the library that can support and enhance the diverse experiences of library users.

Panel participants:
• Ebony Magnus, Head, Belzberg Library, SFU
• Julie Mitchell, Assistant Director, Student Engagement, IKBLC, UBC
• Heather O’Brien, Associate Professor, UBC iSchool
• Joyce Wong, Librarian / Coordinator User Experience, Langara College

The panel was recorded and is available [here]

In the afternoon, we held lightning talks, with talks from Sara Ellis (UBC), Julia Wells (TRU), Adena Brons (SFU), Sarah Parker (UBC), Elyse Sanche (SFU), and Allison Sullivan (snəw̓eyəɬ leləm̓ Langara).

Notes for all the sessions are available in our Community Notes document.

Thanks to everyone who attended and to all our speakers for the excellent and thought-provoking presentations!
