2015 Creative Communities

BC Library Conference 2015

Off Site Events

Every year, the Conference Committee plans a selection of tours and off-site social events to enhance the conference attendees’ experience.

Please note, these tours will have a lot of walking and standing – please wear comfortable footwear. The cost of transit, or any food or beverage is not included and attendees are required to pay their own way.

Full Day Library Tour – Wednesday, May 20th 2015
Limited to 20 participants (must select during conference registration)

7:45 am – Meet at the Sheraton Vancouver Airport Hotel. The tour will be taking public transit, please bring transit fare. A 2 zone ticket is $4 and will be required each way (expires after 90 minutes) – for more information, visit the Translink website.

9:00 – 10:00 am – VPL Central Branch – Inspiration Lab

Please join us for a tour of the Inspiration Lab, VPL’s brand new digital media lab! The Inspiration Lab is a place that combines traditional, digital and new media in a custom-built space dedicated to digital creativity, collaboration and experimentation. It features high-performance computers, analog-to-digital conversion, sound studios, video editing suites and self-publishing.

11:00 – 11:45 am – Richmond Art Gallery

Close Listening: Eli Bornowsky, Jeremy Hof, Monique Mouton, Jinny Yu
Richmond Art Gallery staff will lead a tour of our current exhibition, Close Listening, which brings together the work of four artists who are experimenting with new approaches to painting and abstraction. Collectively, they explore the medium of paint through non-traditional techniques, including assemblage, sculpture, video and installation, while challenging the definition of the act of painting. This exhibition was curated by Ola Wlusek and organized and circulated by the Ottawa Art Gallery.

1:15 – 2:00 pm – Richmond Public Library

Richmond Public Library is looking forward to welcoming this year’s BCLA membership to its innovative new library space “The Launchpad.” This visionary proof of concept space opened in August 2014, and has quickly become a point of connection, a place of possibility and a hub of creativity. Here the community can explore a wide range of new technologies: everything from 3D printing and eBooks, to access to lynda.com and more.

2:15 – 3:00 pm – City of Richmond Museum

Staff will guide participants through a tour of, Interwoven World: Identity and Fashion Tour at the Richmond Museum. What we wear reveals a lot about us. Our fashion choices have evolved over many centuries, often inspired by ideas about our cultural and individual identities—and by history and intercultural trade.  Join us to discover the stories behind silk and cotton, cashmere shawls and hobble skirts, and much more.

3:15 pm – Return back to the Sheraton Vancouver Airport Hotel

Dine Out – CAVU Kitchen Bar – Friday, May 22nd 2015
Limited to 20 participants (select during conference registration)

6:00 pm: Meet in the lobby at the Sheraton Vancouver Airport Hotel

Dine out at one of Richmond’s newest restaurants, CAVU Kitchen Bar. Catch up with friends and get to know colleagues over a delicious meal and glass of wine. Reservations have been made and directions will be provided. All you need to do is come and enjoy!

What to bring? All attendees of the Dine Out dinners are expected to cover their own bill and tip, the fun is included!
