2019 BCLA Pre-Conference Sessions

IT in Libraries: Building Networks

This pre-conference will include a morning keynote and many opportunities to collaborate and learn from colleagues through a number of breakout group discussions. Key topics are likely to include: security and privacy, website redesign, disaster recovery, cloud networks, network management, and many more!  We hope to see IT staff who work with libraries, library staff who work with systems and technology, and all those interested in library technology.

Keynote Speaker: Steve Till-Rogers is the Director of Technology Services with the Edmonton Public Library. As a member of the EPL’s Senior Leadership team, his portfolio includes strategic oversight and service delivery of IT Infrastructure, Application Services and Digital Initiatives.

Steve-Till-Rogers_Aug2017_600x600Prior to joining EPL, Steve was most recently Vice President, Infrastructure Services with Alberta’s largest credit union. Steve holds a Bachelor of Business in Film and Television Production and a Masters of Information Technology from Queensland University of Technology. He’s been acknowledged as a creative pioneer of emerging technologies, fostering innovation in the provision of information systems. Steve is a previous recipient of the National Credit Union Young Leaders Award which recognizes young leaders in Canada’s credit union system. Steve’s career spans a range of experiences from delivering broadcast television programming to transforming retail banking solutions. Originally from Australia, Steve has swapped surf for snow after relocating to Canada with his family in 2004. In the winter you’ll find him checking ski conditions while summer is all about camping, hiking and eating lots of festival food.

Youth Services Institute

Calling all youth services library staff! Join us for a day of inspiring professional development starting with how we can support youth in our libraries, so many of whom deal with stress and anxiety. Dr. Elizabeth Saewyc, Director of the UBC School of Nursing, Research Director at the McCreary Centre Society, and Executive Director of Stigma and Resilience Among Vulnerable Youth Centre (SARAVYC), will share her internationally recognized research on youth mental health and resilience, and unpack the latest data on youth mental health in BC. Her talk will be followed by a facilitated discussion. The afternoon is a chance to hear from you. Your colleagues will present lightning talks covering a range of topics relevant to children and teens.
