{"id":77,"date":"2024-11-07T13:46:44","date_gmt":"2024-11-07T18:46:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bclaconnect.ca\/arc\/?page_id=77"},"modified":"2025-01-19T15:22:29","modified_gmt":"2025-01-19T20:22:29","slug":"anti-racism-committee-community-agreements","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/bclaconnect.ca\/arc\/anti-racism-committee-community-agreements\/","title":{"rendered":"Anti-racism Committee Community Agreements"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The following ways of working together were established by the Committee in October 2024.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Confidentiality is our default<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What happens in this space stays in this space and is not shared, unless we all agree it can be shared.<\/li>\n<li>When sharing, we anonymize details but recognize that the library world is small, and anonymizing is not enough without agreement to share.<\/li>\n<li>We flag when what we are not open to what we are saying being shared.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>We assume positive intention when others speak<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We give each other space to finish speaking and don\u2019t expect polished perfect speech<\/li>\n<li>We don\u2019t reject views that may differ from ours but allow different views to enhance and increase our own perspective on the topic.<\/li>\n<li>We practice attentive, active listening<\/li>\n<li>We ask questions with a willingness to learn<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>We are <\/strong><strong>conscious of our privilege and ensure that <\/strong><strong>we<\/strong><strong> leave space for others who may have lived experience of oppression.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Neither our disagreement nor our agreement is required for another person\u2019s contribution to be valuable or valued.<\/li>\n<li>We acknowledge that we all have different experiences, educations and value systems that are valid. (intersectionality)<\/li>\n<li>We challenge ideas, not people, by catching and releasing<\/li>\n<li>We acknowledge discomfort and emotions are often a part of difficult work<\/li>\n<li>We don\u2019t have to bring our whole self \u2013 we can share what you wish, and we believe and trust each other in what we choose to share<\/li>\n<li>We use language that helps when our view differs &#8211; such as:<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cAnother way I think about this is \u2026\u201d rather than to say, for example, \u201cI disagree &#8230;\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>There is no need to reject one opinion to make room for yours. Think about the difference between \u201cI hear you, but \u2026\u201d and \u201cI hear you, and &#8230;\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>We have a process for dealing with conflict if someone is not comfortable bringing it up in the meeting<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Go to one of the co-chairs, if the issue is with the co-chairs, then go to Rina.<\/li>\n<li>If anyone on the committee feels an issue has gone beyond our ability to resolve it as a group, Rina can bring in Adeline from The Commons to support us to resolve and move forward.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>We make decisions by consensus; everyone needs a chance to be heard and needs to be able to live with any decision made. We do our best to get to consensus.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We will poll the group so people can express their level of agreement.<\/li>\n<li>We will try to find ways to be transparent about areas of disagreement or areas of tension related to important decisions when communicating out<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>We\u2019ll remember that we are important as individuals and doing our best, and the work is important but is not ours alone.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>We are willing to revisit these agreements and respond to emerging needs of the Committee<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The following ways of working together were established by the Committee in October 2024.
