IT in the Library: The Power of Networks

IT in the Library: The Power of Networks

Are you responsible for front-line technology services at your library? Or for building and maintaining library technology from behind the scenes? Does your role require you to plan for or manage IT services, systems or architecture? Then this pre-conference is for you!

The Library IT professional is a relatively new role compared to other library positions. For trained IT staff, the library environment can sometimes seem frustrating and mystifying. For front-line library staff, IT protocols can seem equally baffling. And for many of the library staff managing and delivering library technology services, library IT is an accidental specialization, learned on the job, and often done off the side of one’s desk.

Considering the transformational role that technology is playing in shaping our communities and our services, it is essential for the staff that plan, manage, build, maintain, secure, and deliver library technology services to come together in a community of practice that includes both library and IT professionals.

This pre-conference is designed to provide a forum for library IT professionals and managers to discuss IT and technical issues and share best practices, and will be driven by the priorities and experiences of the attendees. The day will begin with an overview of current issues and priorities in our community, then will continue with lightning talks and roundtable discussions addressing both managerial and technical subjects identified by participants (examples might include: computer access for children; virtualization; digital strategy; Saas and cloud services; technology skills development; IT project planning; PCs versus thin clients; securing IT infrastructure; vendor issues; etc.).

By the end of the session, we expect to have defined an agenda for future conversations and taken the first steps toward becoming an ongoing community of practice.

Whether you can attend or not, if you work at the intersection of libraries and IT you can help shape the agenda by filling out this short survey - http://surveys.libraries.coop/limesurvey/index.php/348499/
