For more details on these sections, see the <a title=\"Content areas\" href=\"https:\/\/bclaconnect.ca\/perspectives\/guidelines-for-submissions\/content-areas\/\">Content Areas section<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><a name=\"guidelines\"><\/a>Guidelines for submissions<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>All submissions must fit within the <em>Perspectives<\/em>\u00a0Focus and Scope.<\/li>\n<li>Submissions will be edited for brevity, clarity, and consistency of style and format, following the <i>Canadian Press Stylebook<\/i> for grammar.\n<ul>\n<li>For additional guidance, consult any publication of <em>The Elements of Style<\/em> by Strunk and White.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Submissions should follow generally accepted rules of sentence structure and grammar.\n<ul>\n<li>Use of active voice. For example:\n<ul>\n<li>Passive= &#8220;The cat was bitten by the dog.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Active= &#8220;The dog bit the cat.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Avoid the use of the first person; 3rd person is preferred point of view (even when writing about your organization). For example:\n<ul>\n<li>1st person= &#8220;We implemented a new program.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>3rd person= &#8220;Sunnyvale Library implemented a new program.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>For additional guidance, consult any publication of<em> The Elements of Style\u00a0<\/em>by Strunk and White<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>It is expected that articles are based on fact and balanced.<\/li>\n<li>Secondary sources must be cited, using an in-text author date system, with a reference list placed at the end of the article.<\/li>\n<li>All submissions must have at least one author. Multiple authors will be accepted.<\/li>\n<li>All authors must include a simple biography.\n<ul>\n<li>For example: Jane Smith is a Librarian at Pleasantville Public Library in Pleasantville, B.C.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>All photos\/images must be accompanied by a description of the photo and the name of the photographer.<\/li>\n<li>It is expected that the contributor has cleared copyright permissions for any photo\/image submitted to <em>Perspectives<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Minimum word length per article is 150 words. Maximum word length is 2,000 words.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b><a name=\"opinion\"><\/a>Opinion Writing Guidelines<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Opinion pieces reflect personal and\/or professional opinion. They add to an existing debate or begin a new discussion. Opinion pieces are thoughtful, respectful, measured, and present evidence-based argument. They do not use inflammatory language, clich\u00e9, or make unsupported and\/or wide-sweeping allegation. Opinion pieces are provocative and require the writer to take a position. Strong opinion pieces state the argument at the beginning, present factual and non-emotive evidence, and address potential counter-arguments. The writing is in active \u2013 not passive \u2013 voice. Most importantly, opinion pieces should inform and engage BCLA membership and encourage dialogue.<\/p>\n<p>All opinion pieces in <em>Perspectives<\/em>\u00a0will be noted as such and will contain the byline and short bio of the author. All current editorial policies apply to opinion pieces. These policies include the <em>Perspectives<\/em>\u00a0Focus and Scope.<\/p>\n<h1><b><a name=\"submit\"><\/a>Submissions<\/b><\/h1>\n<h2><b>Submission process<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Authors should submit articles using the <em>Perspectives<\/em>\u00a0template; however, template submissions will also be accepted as:\n<ul>\n<li>raw text in a .doc or .docx file format and<\/li>\n<li>high-resolution digital images (at least 300 DPI in .jpg file format)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Use the <a href=\"https:\/\/bclaconnect.ca\/perspectives\/submit-now\/\" rel=\"noopener\">online form for submissions<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Deadline for submissions (subject to change with specific issues):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Story pitches and ideas are\u00a0due the first of the month<\/li>\n<li>Content due by the 15 of the month<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b><a name=\"images\"><\/a>Guidelines for\u00a0images<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>All images must be high-resolution (at least 300 DPI)<\/li>\n<li>Color images are preferred, but not required<\/li>\n<li>The submitting author\/institution must have the right to allow the image to be reproduced, or the image must be in the public domain. Submitters will include copyright license, creative commons information or other credits where appropriate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b><a name=\"edit\"><\/a>Editing and approval process<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>All content is reviewed by the Editorial Board and Editors, and the final copy of the publication is approved by the Editorial Team.<\/p>\n<p>Content that has been previously published, including via the BCLA email listserv, must be re-purposed for use within <em>Perspectives<\/em>.
