SUZY ARBOR<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As we\u00a0developed the criteria and contest guidelines, the scoring became sophisticated, the categories more varied, and the\u00a0Victory Belt\u00a0so camp. We launched the competition in January and 16\u00a0VPL\u00a0departments\u00a0formed teams.<\/p>\n<p>Participants report on one book they read each month throughout 2016, recording the areas of diversity the book addresses.\u00a0The intention is to reward a willingness to reach for more diversity in our current reading habits, not\u00a0quickly\u00a0reading a lot of books.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">No\u00a0list\u00a0can fully represent the\u00a0complexities\u00a0of real life diversity. There were some tough choices in creating\u00a0the\u00a0categories,\u00a0and the list we developed is just a\u00a0guide\u00a0for this year&#8217;s reading.\u00a0We\u00a0mixed\u00a0more challenging categories that stretch our reading choices with less challenging selections to help people get started.\u00a0We put\u00a0a focus on reading local\u00a0as\u00a0an opportunity to appreciate the diversity of our local authors.<\/p>\n<p>We came up with 17 ways to\u00a0score points for your book\u2014all means of rejecting the status quo\u00a0with your reading choices in 2016.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The 2016 list:\u202f\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Author of colour<\/li>\n<li>Mixed\u00a0race author<\/li>\n<li>First Nations author<\/li>\n<li>Female author<\/li>\n<li>Graphic novel by a female or author of colour<\/li>\n<li>LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans*, queer) &#8211; protagonist or author<\/li>\n<li>Over age of 70 &#8211; protagonist or author<\/li>\n<li>Physical, developmental\/cognitive or sensory disability\/differences &#8211; protagonist or author<\/li>\n<li>Positive portrayal of main character living with mental illness<\/li>\n<li>Under 20 but written for the adult market &#8211; protagonist or author<\/li>\n<li>Book in translation from a non-western country<\/li>\n<li>Challenged or banned book<\/li>\n<li>Refugee experience<\/li>\n<li>Immigrant perspective<\/li>\n<li>Vancouver author<\/li>\n<li>BC author<\/li>\n<li>Canadian author<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_1024\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bclaconnect.ca\/perspectives\/files\/2016\/05\/Reading-Matters-Krissy-Bublitz.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1024\" class=\"wp-image-1024 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/bclaconnect.ca\/perspectives\/files\/2016\/05\/Reading-Matters-Krissy-Bublitz-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Reading Matters participants. KRISSY BUBLITZ<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Nobody polices\u00a0what\u00a0each participant\u00a0decides\u00a0to\u00a0report for points. The honour system allows people to think through\u00a0the categories and determine which are relevant\u00a0and appropriate.<\/p>\n<p>We decided to have the\u00a0teams&#8217; recording sheets\u00a0visible to all staff so\u00a0we can\u00a0see each other\u2019s selections.\u00a0By sharing our diverse reading selection, we\u00a0enhance\u00a0our\u00a0readers\u2019\u00a0advisory and collection development\u00a0knowledge.\u00a0We collectively build a\u00a0greater awareness of materials that are not often highlighted in today\u2019s publishing world.<\/p>\n<p>At\u00a0the\u00a0Kitsilano\u00a0Branch\u00a0on Vancouver\u2019s west side,\u00a0a\u00a0revolving selection of diverse books is kept on a cart\u00a0where Children\u2019s Librarian April Ens has noticed that\u00a0some staff felt guilty selecting a board book or picture book\u00a0because there isn\u2019t much text. However, selecting and reading\u00a0children\u2019s books by\u00a0Julie\u00a0Flett, Nicola Campbell,\u00a0or Richard Van Camp\u00a0lead to \u201cdiscussions of the history of Books for BC Babies, the amazing art,\u00a0Flett\u2019s\u00a0inclusion of\u00a0Mischif\u00a0and\u00a0Cree languages, or Campbell\u2019s gentle discussion of how residential schools disrupted children\u2019s family life. CHRISTIE MENZO<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Teams and scores can be used for competition, but the best part is\u00a0using\u00a0them for recognition and support.\u00a0Celebrating\u00a0staff\u00a0engagement in\u00a0the\u00a0challenge\u00a0is a highlight of the program. At Central Library, we have monthly lunchroom meet-ups to\u00a0share impressions of our books with colleagues in a casual environment.<\/p>\n<p>So far, the competition each month has been heated.
