These values articulate the importance of diverse communities and the need for intellectual freedom in the face of current social, political, and cultural debates, which can be exclusionary and hateful.<\/p>\n<p>In light of the policies and other actions being introduced by the new US administration, library and information professionals throughout the world are being compelled to revisit and defend their professional values. For example, the BCLA recently\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/bclaconnect.ca\/highlight\/library-core-values\/\" target=\"_blank\">endorsed<\/a>\u202fan <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/news\/press-releases\/2017\/01\/ala-opposes-new-administration-policies-contradict-core-values\" target=\"_blank\">American Library Association (ALA) statement<\/a> defending library core values, which specifically addressed issues regarding access to information, discrimination. and intellectual freedom.<\/p>\n<p>The editors of\u202f<i>BCLA Perspectives<\/i>\u202finvited library and information professionals to contribute to this special issue of the Association\u2019s quarterly online newsletter. \u2018\u2019The Library Values Issue\u2019\u2019 features articles and other content related to BCLA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/bclaconnect.ca\/about\/bcla-values-statement\/\" target=\"_blank\">stated values<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"0\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b>Access<\/b><b> and Inclusion<\/b><\/li>\n<li data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"0\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b>Intellectual Freedom<\/b><\/li>\n<li data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"0\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b>Innovation and Creativity<\/b><\/li>\n<li data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"0\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b>Diversity<\/b><\/li>\n<li data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"0\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b>Literacy and Lifelong Learning<\/b><\/li>\n<li data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"0\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b>Accountability<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While it may seem obvious that library professionals should support library values, in this current political climate \u2013 where threats to information access and intellectual freedom are a reality \u2013 it is particularly important to understand their purpose and power. \u2018\u2019The Library Values Issue\u2019\u2019 is an opportunity for members of the BC library community (and beyond) to reflect upon the standards established by the Association, which are similar to those put forth by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/aboutala\/sites\/ala.org.aboutala\/files\/content\/governance\/alaelection\/2017\/All%20Councilor%20bios%202017..pdf\" target=\"_blank\">ALA<\/a> and other library organizations.<\/p>\n<p>Using BCLA\u2019s stated values as a template,\u00a0this issue is a direct response to new and ongoing challenges to these standards.\u202fEach article in the issue explores a specific value (or set of values) of the Association, which we hope will help to strengthen and reinvigorate library and information professionals\u2019 connections with these values.<\/p>\n<p>We look forward to producing future issues themed on other relevant topics, and are already in the process of planning an education issue for August 2017.
