{"id":5927,"date":"2018-03-07T20:55:01","date_gmt":"2018-03-08T04:55:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bclaconnectrev.wpengine.com\/perspectives\/?p=5927"},"modified":"2025-01-22T11:26:01","modified_gmt":"2025-01-22T19:26:01","slug":"the-social-issue-a-letter-from-the-editors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bclaconnect.ca\/perspectives\/2018\/03\/07\/the-social-issue-a-letter-from-the-editors\/","title":{"rendered":"The Social Issue: A Letter from the Editors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following the successful themed publications of 2017, <i>BCLA Perspectives<\/i> is proud to continue the trend with our first issue of 2018: <b>The Social Issue<\/b><b>. <\/b>In it, we address some of the many social issues facing libraries and how institutions in British Columbia are responding, by serving marginalized communities, managing user safety during the opioid crisis, community building, and committing to indigenous representation in library collections. Our hope is that the stories in the issue highlight local approaches while still providing broad insights on contemporary social pressures.<\/p>\n<p>The editorial team is pleased to welcome our newest editor, Kristina McGuirk, who previously served as the SLAIS student member on the <i>Perspective<\/i><i>s<\/i> editorial board. Kristina \u202fis in the third year of the dual Master of Archival Studies and Master of Library and Information Studies program at UBC. She has worked in various capacities during her education, including positions as a digital projects librarian and an archives and reference\u00a0assistant at UBC, and a student\u00a0librarian at BGC Engineering. Before entering the library and archives world, Kristina was an editor for\u00a0\u202fspecial-interest magazines under the brand<em> \u202fBetter Homes and Gardens<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>We would like to thank our outgoing editor, Cassie McFadden, who was a major contributor to the publication for the past three years. She was a pleasure to work with and she will be missed. We wish her the best!<\/p>\n<p>Finally, Tim McMillan\u2019s term as lead editor is shortly coming to an end, and we are hoping to find a third editor to join our team.
