<\/b>Are you, or have\u00a0you been,\u00a0a recipient of BC History Digitization\u00a0Program (BCHDP) funding? Do your\u00a0BCHDP-funded digital assets\u00a0need a\u00a0new or alternative\u00a0home so they can really shine? How does a no-cost, fully supported hosting solution sound?\u00a0Arca\u00a0may be the\u00a0technical\u00a0solution you are looking for to showcase your digital treasures!<\/p>\n

British Columbia’s\u00a0libraries, museums, archives and galleries with BCHDP-funded materials are eligible for no-cost, fully supported hosting of those materials in\u00a0Arca, BC’s\u00a0award-winning\u00a0collaborative digital repository. This opportunity is made possible by a partnership between the Irving K Barber Learning Centre\u00a0(IKBLC)\u00a0at\u00a0the\u00a0University of\u00a0British\u00a0Columbia\u00a0Library\u00a0and the BC Electronic Library Network\u00a0(BC ELN),\u00a0who share a\u00a0common goal of supporting access to BC’s remarkable wealth of digital assets.<\/p>\n

In Arca, your digital assets would be searchable as a single collection in the\u00a0BCHDP Arca site<\/a>, and your images would be beautifully displayed with high-quality, interactive viewers. Your objects would be searchable via SOLR-indexed MODS metadata, each with a persistent identifier for linking to and from external catalogues or webpages.<\/p>\n

Your collections would become discoverable\u00a0via arcabc.ca\u00a0along with thousands of BC assets from 26\u00a0Arca\u00a0partner\u00a0organizations, leveraging the visibility of the entire project.\u00a0In 2017,\u00a0Arca\u00a0collections had over 20,000 visits from 160 countries, with 59% of traffic coming from Google searches.<\/p>\n

The IKBLC-BC ELN\u00a0partnership provides BCHDP participants with full support\u00a0and hosting\u00a0from the\u00a0BC ELN-based\u00a0Arca\u00a0Administrative Centre\u00a0from November 2017 to November 2020, including friendly training and personalised front-line support for migrating, configuring and maintaining your collections.\u00a0Our support is designed to ensure\u00a0that\u00a0you can\u00a0use\u00a0the repository with minimal investment of time and resources.<\/p>\n

Terrace Public Library\u00a0(TPL)\u00a0jumped at the opportunity to\u00a0put\u00a0their Eleanor\u00a0Muehle\u00a0Newspaper Archive\u00a0into\u00a0Arca, making this important resource\u00a0searchable and accessible to their community.\u00a0“Holy smokes! Looks fantastic! I really like the layout, its\u00a0sooo\u00a0much clearer to see what\u2019s available in our collection now \u2013 I’m sure patrons\u00a0are going to love this as well,”\u00a0said\u00a0Steve\u00a0Purita,\u00a0TPL library technician.<\/p>\n

UBC Library\u2019s\u00a0IKBLC and BC ELN are\u00a0keen to explore ways that\u00a0Arca\u00a0hosting can continue\u00a0to be an affordable, accessible solution for\u00a0even the smallest\u00a0organizations\u00a0beyond November 2020. Stay tuned!<\/p>\n
