(Ex: Products that don\u2019t work as advertised, workflows that are now out of date, devices or tools you\u2019ve struggled to learn or teach to others.)<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A whopping 116 respondents answered our first essay question about on-the-job frustrations related to technology.\u00a0The frustrations generally fit into six themes, which are identified\u00a0below.\u00a0One\u00a0comment appeared multiple times but did not warrant a broader theme or examples\u2014a lack of IT support. Whether that\u2019s a lack of IT resources, tech-minded people, or an actual IT department, for example, was unclear.<\/p>\n<p>The underlying issue to many of these frustrations,\u00a0frequently given voice in\u00a0the answers, is the financial constraints that cause these\u00a0effects.\u00a0Additional factors leading to frustration included time\/knowledge\u00a0required to stay up-to-date\u00a0and the inability to explain or justify some issues to patrons (for example,\u00a0wifi\u00a0that can\u2019t keep up with patrons).<\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><b>O<\/b><b>utdated, damaged, and otherwise insuff<\/b><b>i<\/b><b>cient hardware and software<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Printers\u00a0with\u00a0outdated\/unintuitive\/\u00a0payment\u00a0systems and\u00a0use\u00a0procedures<\/li>\n<li>Broken and\/or\u00a0outdated\u00a0mice, keyboards, printers,\u00a0etc<\/li>\n<li>Slow or weak\u00a0internet<\/li>\n<li>Compatibility issues between PC and Mac<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b>\u00a0<b>The<\/b><b>\u00a0quickly changing nature of technology\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It&#8217;s hard to find the time to keep up<\/li>\n<li>Tech rapidly becomes obsolete<\/li>\n<li>It takes too long to implement new simple technology into the daily workflow<\/li>\n<li>Balancing what we need immediately with trends with what will be needed two years down the road<\/li>\n<li>Too much of a focus on flashy, new tech and not training,\u00a0etc<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Vendor<\/b><b>s<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Overpromising on what products can do<\/li>\n<li>Lack of support<\/li>\n<li>Not understanding user- and service-centred practices<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Discontinuity with tech resources and staffing<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tech products\u00a0are available at the library but there\u2019s not enough staff\u00a0scheduled to maximize\u00a0programming, use, and troubleshooting<\/li>\n<li>Customers want to help themselves and learn on their own, but there\u2019s not staff or resources to create guides and other documentation to assist\u00a0users<\/li>\n<li>One person with a question about how to use their e-reader at the desk means that as one person covering a whole floor I can either help them or I cannot offer great service to the many other people that need help finding books, using the photocopier\u00a0etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Balancing staff and management expectations<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>More formal training for staff about tech resources vs wanting staff to explore and learn\u00a0on their\u00a0own<\/li>\n<li>time for learning\u2014on your own vs on the clock<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Patrons<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>unrealistic expectations of staff knowledge\/skills (with personal devices and institutional technology)<\/li>\n<li>not knowing their passwords for devices\/accounts they need help with<\/li>\n<li>provide adequate access to technology in the ways that users require, because everyone&#8217;s needs are individualized.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Question:\u00a0What frustrates you about technology in your position and\/or day-to-day work?
