{"id":6961,"date":"2018-09-05T11:05:00","date_gmt":"2018-09-05T18:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bclaconnectrev.wpengine.com\/perspectives\/?p=6961"},"modified":"2025-01-22T11:25:59","modified_gmt":"2025-01-22T19:25:59","slug":"technology-in-the-workplace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bclaconnect.ca\/perspectives\/2018\/09\/05\/technology-in-the-workplace\/","title":{"rendered":"Survey: Technology development in the workplace"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Question:\u00a0<\/b><b>Technology development in the workplace: How comfortable do you feel doing the following?\u00a0<\/b><b>Please rate the statements on this scale:<br \/>\n1= not comfortable | 2 = neutral | 3= comfortable | 4= N\/A<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Asking for training or assistance with on-the-job technology<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Troubleshooting IT hardware\/software issues on library devices or computing equipment<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Advocating for new technology (ex: to be installed\/available, incorporated into\u00a0<\/b><b>programming)<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Proposing new projects involving technology (ex: digitization\u00a0<\/b><b>project)<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Making decisions about what technology to purchase<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Developing policies for appropriate use of technology in the library<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We know these responses aren\u2019t able to shed light on the\u00a0<i>why\u00a0<\/i>behind these ratings. For example, we don\u2019t know if discomfort proposing new projects is due to the respondent\u2019s lack of ideas, unfamiliarity with specific technology, newness to the profession, or a lack of procedure and process for how to propose these ideas.\u00a0However, the generally low percentages of \u2018comfortable\u2019 responses could suggest that these are areas that could use further support and development in libraries.<\/p>\n<p>Compared to the previous question in our survey, respondents seem more confident in institutional decisions than in providing user support: there were no responses with high percentages of &#8216;not comfortable.&#8217; These\u00a0results\u00a0may\u00a0reflect the large percentage of respondents who are more established in their careers and may be making more institutional decisions about technology than helping patrons with it.\u00a0Also, when compared to the previous question, these results have lower percentages of \u2018comfortable\u2019 responses.
