BCLA Perspectives newsletter is an open access, quarterly online publication that communicates and discusses British Columbia Library Association activities and news, library-related issues, and topics of interest to BCLA members.
The editors of BCLA Perspectives are happy to announce the publication of The Education Issue, which takes a close look at the state of library education from the points of view of library students, educators, and professionals alike. We hope that the content from this issue will be useful to members of the Association and anyone else who takes the time to read it.
Included in this issue are results from the Perspectives Education Survey, which elicited 128 participant responses on topics ranging from suggestions for changes to MLIS and library technician curriculum to visions for future library education. In an effort to gather candid and honest feedback, all survey responses have been published anonymously. (Please note that due to the high volume of responses received, the editors were only able to publish a select number of responses to each question and, due to time and space constraints, do not plan to publish the survey responses in their entirety.)
Readers will also find interviews with Diane Thompson, Chair of Langara College’s Library & Information Technology program; Dr. Luanne Freund, Acting Director of the iSchool@UBC; and University of the Fraser Valley Associate Professor Christina Neigel.
This issue also includes an article on challenges to continuing education in special libraries, experiential learning tips for employers and students, advice for doing Readers’ Advisory, and teaching critical analysis in the face of fake news.
Please see the Letter from the Editors for information on new publishing dates for the newsletter. The editors would also like to extend a huge thank you to Kristina McGuirk, who acted as guest editor for this issue in Cassie McFadden’s absence.
Information on the theme of next issue will be announced as it becomes available. In the meantime, if you have any questions about submitting content for a future issue, please email firstname.lastname@example.org. As always, please be sure to read, comment on, and share the current issue!
