Dear Library Leaders, we need your help.
As you know, BCLA is committed to supporting libraries in responding to the climate crisis (see BCLA Climate Emergency Declaration). We recently published 10 calls to action in our BCLA Climate Action Statement: Essential Climate Justice Responsibilities in the Library Sector. Our Climate Action Committee is now conducting a crucial next step by benchmarking BC library progress on climate.
The catch? We can only measure what you report to us – so we need every BC library to contribute to this survey. Whether you’re doing a lot or a little, your contribution will help BCLA identify gaps – and articulate strengths – to climate response in BC libraries, as well as measure progress over time. You’ll also help us identify ways to support you, and advocate on your behalf.

About the 2024 BC Libraries Climate Benchmarking Survey
Here’s what you need know, at a glance:
- Intended to measure climate impacts on and actions of BC libraries over the previous two calendar years (i.e. 2022 and 2023) with planned repeat surveys every two years. (As this is the first survey, we also provide an opportunity to report briefly on relevant details prior to the past two years.)
- Includes all types of libraries (e.g. public, academic, school, special, library schools) and library associations (e.g. federations, consortia).
- Survey opens on June 10 and closes on August 6, 2024. Extended survey period intended to mesh flexibly with local schedules.
- One response per library/organization location, please.
- Will take approximately 25 to 45 mins to complete for each library location. We encourage you to delegate to local library leadership and welcome additional strategic-level submissions if needed (e.g. for larger systems). It’s critical to hear from every library – and is ok if you don’t know the answers to all the questions.
- You can return to a partially complete submission if you accept all cookies. We suggest testing this option on your device before relying upon it. There is also a Back button.
- If you want to gather data from several staff, we suggest you take notes using a printed PDF of the questions, then one person can submit them all at once to the online collector.
- Summary report will be published on the BCLA site. Submissions will be aggregated and anonymized in reporting.
- You can find more details on the Survey Introduction page.
