National and International Library Associations have been addressing the topic of Artificial Intelligence in libraries through statements, toolkits, and guidelines. The brief list below is intended to offer some focused insight into how library organizations are approaching this rapidly changing technology, including policy development and assessment.
Association of Research Libraries & CNI Communications
- Futurespace Libraries AI Toolkit (September 2025)
- The free toolkit “will help you and your colleagues plan, develop policies and operations, and position your organization to thrive in the AI landscape.” The toolkit is organized into flexible modules, alongside structured activities to help library leadership teams, staff, and external stakeholders explore future possibilities, test current strategies, identify opportunities and vulnerabilities, and build readiness for long-term change.
International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions
- IFLA Entry Point to Libraries and AI: Internet Manifesto Annex I (May 2025)
- The document is based on the belief that library professionals have a duty to ensure that the potential benefits of AI for knowledge access and creation are achieved in a responsible way and that harmful aspects are challenged. It is intended to be a tool to support librarians in the assessment of ethical AI use, but it is not designed as a standalone decision-making instrument. The authors “strongly encourage individuals to engage in broader discussions with colleagues, peer-organisations and other libraries to ensure context-sensitive approaches to AI use.”
American Library Association AI Policy Working Group
- Guidance on the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Libraries – DRAFT (April 2026)
- Through the lens of ALA’S Core Values “this document is intended to support library professionals in navigating the opportunities and challenges that artificial intelligence presents for our institutions, our communities, and our profession.” The goal is to encourage libraries to develop local guidelines and policies for AI use within their institutions. This draft document will be reviewed at the 2026 ALA Annual Conference in Chicago before Council action.
