Welcome to the 2006 British Columbia Library Conference Sharing a Vision: The Power of Collaboration! During the past few months, we have experienced multi-type libraries working together to create new programs such as the Gateway and Virtual Reference projects. Initiated by the Public Library Services Branch, these projects bring together people from public, academic and special libraries to create programs
that benefit people throughout the province.
The benefits of this kind of cooperation are many. Libraries both large and small can benefit from the ideas and knowledge of people working in a variety of agencies. Cost savings related to jointly acquiring database licenses help to free up monetary resources for new projects. We can learn much from each other, as evidenced in a recent Literacy Forum that highlighted the many innovative projects already happening in libraries across the province. And best of all, the public will benefit from expanded services and access to information despite the challenges of geography, and have increased confidence that tax dollars are being utilized in the best way possible.
The 2006 conference will build upon the excitement generated by the renewed interest in libraries and encourage people to continue their cooperative efforts.
