Description: Mis- and disinformation are formidable threats, undermining confidence in democratic systems, damaging public health efforts, and challenging policy and governance efforts across the world. Amid the rising spread of false information in Canada, what role might public libraries play in equipping our communities to face this threat? With insights from two recent projects exploring misinformation and public libraries, this interactive session will share learnings, evidence-based strategies, and explore how public libraries and library workers are grappling with mis- and disinformation. This interactive session will include facilitated discussions about how public libraries might approach this growing challenge.
Learning Objectives:
- Participants will learn evidence-based strategies for slowing the spread of misinformation and disinformation
- Participants will learn about the work Canadian public libraries are doing with Canada’s Privy Council to build community resilience to false information
- Participants will learn about the experiences of Canadian public libraries and library workers as they grapple with the intersection of medical misinformation and intellectual freedom
