October Keynote and AI Exploration Series

October is Canada’s National Library Month, which makes it the perfect time to launch our new  “AI Exploration Series.” This series has been created in response to your requests for more learning opportunities focused on artificial intelligence, and will feature both practical and theoretical sessions in the coming months. Our first practical AI workshop is hosted by Issam Laradji (Data Scientist at ServiceNow Research and tech program host at West Vancouver Public Library) called “Best Practises for Hosting AI Workshops at the Public Library” on Wednesday, October 16th at 10am-11:30am PST on Zoom.

Issam will provide detailed guidance on how to conduct engaging and informative AI workshops with a public library audience who may have diverse skills and interests. Even if you’re not a library programmer, this session might appeal to any library worker who is feeling less than confident on the topic and have an interest in learning more about AI tools and the latest developments.

Next, we’re pleased to announce that Dr. Brandy McNeil (Deputy Director of Branch Programs and Services at NYPL and President-Elect of the Public Library Association) is our keynote speaker for this celebratory month.

Her presentation, “Empowering Libraries: Exploring the AI Frontier” will be offered on Zoom, Wednesday, October 30th at 2pm-3pm PST. This should be a fantastic learning opportunity, with Dr. McNeil discussing innovative AI applications, practical strategies for integrating AI into library services, and the ethical considerations that come with these advancements.

Both sessions will be recorded, but we encourage those who are able to attend live and have the opportunity to engage and ask questions. A reminder that closed captioning is available through Zoom and recordings of these events on our Vimeo account will include a transcript. Please contact Natalie Porter, Professional Development Coordinator if there are further accessibility supports you need.
