Description: Public libraries are uniquely positioned to support Indigenous Language Revitalization and Preservation in their communities. Come learn how to embark on this important work! Speaking from our experience with the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Sníchim revitalization project, we will discuss first steps, relationship building, project planning, funding, stewardship, and how to navigate the inevitable challenges and setbacks. Our learning objectives include:

Presenters:
Tsitsáyxemaat Rebecca Duncan is of Squamish and Musqueam descent. She has devoted her life to preserving Skwxwú7mesh Sníchim, the Squamish Language, and passing down the cultural teachings that have been handed down to her from her late Papa and his Papa and so on and so on since the beginning of time. Tsitsáyxemaat is a knowledge keeper, storyteller, weaver, traditional cook, language teacher, singer, and dancer.
Kendra Sakamoto is a librarian at the West Vancouver Memorial Library where she spearheaded the IFLA award-winning Climate Writer in Residence program. Her work focuses on reconciliation and Indigenous programming as well as climate action work. Kendra developed and maintains the library’s Community Demonstration Garden, Swáy̓wi Temíxw. Prior to her work in libraries, she spent years traveling the world with Cirque du Soleil and the Radio City Rockettes.
